The site was magnificent—a hilltop overlooking the northern reaches of the Byram River and forest that could never be developed—but difficult: the ground was almost entirely ledge that needed extensive blasting to give the house a proper platform and make way for a swimming pool. This contemporary multilevel contains about 3500 square feet. At one end, a four-level tower contains three bedrooms with en suite baths, a TV room with a powder room and a studio/exercise room. At the other end, a main-floor master suite connects with a large great room with living, dining and kitchen areas all looking up at a unique waveform bamboo slat ceiling. A truly green building material due its unparalleled growth rate, bamboo is also used for the flooring, stairs, cabinets and paneling. A standing-seam metal roof delivers long life and low maintenance. Specially crafted details include a stainless-steel and walnut stair-tower balustrade that rises through four levels and a massive stone-faced fireplace with a 15-foot long stone hearth.
